Abolishing Slavery

Slavery trade was dominant in the peninsula, and it was a pre Islamic Practice  accepted by people for centuries .so,  It exited much before the unification of the Arabian Peninsula by king AbdulAziz, as  It was very easy for merchants to transport Africans from Africa through the Red Sea to trade them all over the Peninsula.
King Abdulaziz , who was known for his humanitarian nature ,ordered the prohibition of the trade in (1355 H/1936) ,but was not totally eradicated .
After his death, and the succession of his son king Saud to the throne, social changes prevailed allover the world, which made King Saud recognize the importance of the abolition of slavery. Consequently, he ordered the formation of a committee to study the initiation of such a decree in (1380H/ 1960). The committee was chaired by the Minister of Interior, Prince Abdul Muhsin Bin Abdul-Aziz assisted by Sheikh Mohammed Al Harkan, Secretary General of World Islamic League and other advisors.
During that period, King Saud fell ill and traveled to the USA in (1382H-1962) for treatment where by he met with president Kennedy both in Florida and Washington, and discussed many issues, one of them was president Kennedy s ten points of reforms in the kingdom , and one of them was the abolition of slavery which, he also discussed with    his brother crown_Prince Faisal afterwards .Upon their mutual return from the USA,  the cabinet headed by Prime minister Prince Faisal convened in the presence  of King Saud on November 6/1962 - 9/6/1382 H, the decree to abolish slavery was finally issued by the Government . In his declaration, Crown-prince Faisal confirmed "that this law is one of the measures of King Saud Government". The ruling prescribed government financial indemnities for everyone who freed slaves in order to encourage citizens to carry out that step as fast as possible.
